Reporting to: Dean and Vice Dean of Business, School of Business and Social Sciences

 

Purpose of Position: 

The primary responsibilities of this position include delivering lectures on bespoke Special Purpose Awards for the Department of Social Protection (DSP) across a range of subject areas related to business, management and professional skills. The role also involves developing curriculum and programme materials and engaging in scholarly activity aligned with programme provision.

 

The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in business and management practices, professional skills development, and digital competencies. They will possess both the necessary academic qualifications and relevant professional experience to effectively bridge theory and practice and support the continued development of this strategically important partnership with the Department of Social Protection.

  • Business and management: Accounts, Customer Service, Operations Management, Organisational Behaviour and Decision Making.

  • Professional and communication skills: Communications, Presentation Skills and Report Writing.

Key Responsibilities: 

Teaching 

  • Deliver lectures in Business, Management and Professional Skills on bespoke DSP programmes.

  • Deliver daytime teaching between 9.00am and 5.00pm, via Teams or in person, as required.

  • Support students in their learning through guidance, mentoring, and constructive feedback.

  • Engage fully in assessment processes, including setting and grading examinations and assignments, attending assessment boards, and liaising with external examiners as required.

  • Provide timely and high-quality feedback on coursework, project work, and other assessments.

  • Develop and update course materials, incorporating current business practices, digital tools, AI applications and professional skills development.

  • Participate in programme committees and adhere to Quality Assurance processes.

  • Assist in the preparation of validation and review documentation and contribute to programme enhancement.

 

Programme Development 

  • Assist in the development of existing programmes and new programmes. This may involve drafting submission documents, liaison with validating bodies, promoting, implementing and reviewing programmes.

  • Support the integration of contemporary business, communication and digital skills into the curriculum.

  • Engage in the promotion and continuous improvement of programmes.

  • Prepare teaching materials, tutorials and associated academic content.

 

Research 

  • Undertake scholarly activity relevant to the area of expertise.

  • Engage with emerging trends in business, management, professional skills development, digital literacy and AI.

 

External Bodies 

  • Maintain and develop NCI's strategic relationship with the Department of Social Protection.

  • Maintain links with relevant professional, academic and industry bodies.

  • Contribute to programme enhancement and stakeholder engagement where appropriate.

General 

  • Assist in the development of the School of Business and Social Sciences.

  • Contribute to academic and disciplinary committees and meetings as requested.

  • Represent the College at functions and promotional events such as exhibitions, school visits, open days, recruitment evenings and other external events, as required.

  • Liaise with students as appropriate.

 

Qualifications & Experience Required: 

Essential Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree in Business, Management or a related discipline.

  • Level 8 Honours Degree in Business, Management or a related discipline.

 

Essential Experience and Skills Required 

  • Relevant lecturing or teaching experience in higher education.

  • Significant knowledge and practical experience in business, management and professional skills development.

  • Excellent communication, organisational and time-management skills.

  • Strong digital and IT competencies.

  • Experience of using digital technologies and AI tools within educational or professional environments.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative as a self-starter.

  • Commitment to high-quality teaching and student engagement.

 

Desirable Criteria 

  • Experience in customer service, operations management, organisational behaviour or professional skills training.

  • Experience of programme development and curriculum enhancement.

  • Experience of working with public sector organisations.

 

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary Band: Academic I €37,271- €57,027 pro-rata

Hours: 17.5 hours per week

Annual Leave: 34 days pro-rata

Shortlisting

 

HR draft up the shortlisting documents and provide the initial screening to determine if a person meets the essential criteria of the competition. A shortlisting panel is generally made up of two senior grade staff members from the relevant department for which the role is being recruited.
