Job Description: Lecturer in Law, Ethics and Mediation -  0.5 FTE

 

Reporting to: Dean and Vice Dean of Business, School of Business and Social Sciences

 

Purpose of Position: 

The key functions of this position are to deliver high-quality teaching on bespoke Special Purpose Awards for the Department of Social Protection (DSP), develop curriculum and programme-related materials, and undertake scholarly activity associated with the relevant subject areas. The role will support the continued development of this strategically important partnership and contribute to the sustainability and enhancement of DSP provision.

Teaching will be delivered on a part-time basis during daytime hours, via Teams or in person.

The appointee may have the opportunity to continue to other programmes as per the needs of the school and under direction of the Vice Dean

Key Responsibilities: 

Teaching 

  • Deliver lectures on bespoke DSP programmes in Law, Ethics and Mediation.

  • Deliver daytime teaching between 9.00am and 5.00pm, via Teams or in person, as required.

  • Support students in their learning through guidance, mentoring, and constructive feedback.

  • Engage fully in assessment processes, including setting and grading examinations and assignments, attending assessment boards, and liaising with external examiners as required.

  • Provide timely and high-quality feedback on coursework and other assessed work.

  • Develop and update course materials, incorporating current legal, ethical, mediation and professional practice developments.

  • Participate in programme committees and adhere to Quality Assurance processes.

  • Assist in the preparation of validation and review documentation and contribute to programme enhancement.

 

Programme Development 

  • Assist in the development of existing programmes and new programmes. This may involve drafting submission documents, liaison with validating bodies, promoting, implementing and reviewing programmes.

  • Support the identification of emerging training and development needs within DSP provision.

  • Engage in the promotion and continuous improvement of programmes.

  • Prepare teaching materials, tutorials, and associated academic content.

 

Research 

  • Undertake scholarly activity relevant to the area of expertise.

  • Engage with emerging trends in law, ethics, mediation and related fields.

 

External Bodies 

  • Maintain and develop NCI's strategic relationship with the Department of Social Protection.

  • Maintain links with relevant professional, academic and external bodies where appropriate.

  • Contribute to programme enhancement and external stakeholder engagement where appropriate.

 

General 

  • Assist in the development of the School of Business and Social Sciences.

  • Contribute to academic and disciplinary committees and meetings as requested.

  • Represent the College at functions and promotional events such as exhibitions, open days, recruitment evenings and other external events, as required.

  • Liaise with students as appropriate.

 

Qualifications & Experience Required: 

Essential Qualifications 

  • Level 9 qualification in Law or a related discipline.

  • Level 8 Honours Degree in Law or a related discipline.

Essential Experience and Skills Required 

  • Relevant lecturing or teaching experience in higher education.

  • Significant knowledge and practical experience in law, ethics, mediation or related areas.

  • Excellent communication, organisational, and time-management skills.

  • Strong digital and IT competencies.

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative as a self-starter.

  • Commitment to high-quality teaching and student engagement.

 

Desirable Criteria 

  • Professional experience in mediation, employment law, ethics, public policy or related fields.

  • Experience of programme development and curriculum enhancement.

  • Experience of working with public sector organisations.

 

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary Band: Academic I €37,271 - €57,027 pro-rata

Hours: 17.5 hours per week

Annual Leave: 34 days pro-rata

Shortlisting

 

HR draft up the shortlisting documents and provide the initial screening to determine if a person meets the essential criteria of the competition. A shortlisting panel is generally made up of two senior grade staff members from the relevant department for which the role is being recruited.
